The recording of our November webinar – Serenity, Sanity, and Sobriety through the Holidays – is now availabe on the CIR+ Recovery Center. We had a wonderful discussion led by 4 CIR community members with experience in recovery from alcoholism, drug addiction, food addiction, lust addiction, and the family impact of addiction. There are many nuggets of wisdom shared throughout the recording and I highly recommend you check it out as we approach Christmas.

This link will take you directly to the recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsY-sIOGtj8

Hey Regina – I’m glad you found the webinar with Erin helpful. You can find her article The Magic If: Acting Our Way Out of Compulsive Eating here: https://catholicinrecovery.com/the-magic-if-acting-our-way-out-of-compulsive-overeating/.

You can also find a list of articles related to compulsive eating behaviors here: https://catholicinrecovery.com/category/compulsive-eating-behaviors/

Are there any other topics you (or anyone else) would like to see explored in a blog post or webinar?

    Anne,

This is the right spot to bring this type of question and concern. Per our meeting guidelines, attending a virtual meeting where others cannot be overheard is an important part of maintaining privacy, anonymity, and confidentiality. Your inclination to express that in a Christian manner is spot on and I know the balance is a bit delicate. For the well-being of the group and each participant, it is important that someone say something.

You could send him a private chat message to ask him to attend in a place where others cannot overhear or oversee the meeting, adding that it’s an important part of protecting the privacy of each attendee. If that is not effective, bring it up to the meeting facilitator and suggest a group announcement while they’re in attendance. You might mention to the facilitator before the meeting that you’re going to request that he find another place to attend the meeting so he/she is aware. If they are still not in compliance with the guidelines, then further action might be required such as removing him from the meeting in order to protect privacy and anonymity, which is paramount for wellness of the group. I believe this is aligned with what Jesus would suggest (Matthew 18:15-20).

Feel free to report back here or inquire more about what can be done. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

    Scott

Keep coming back, Mark! Your presence in meetings is surely of support to others. If you have experience working through the Twelve Steps, you might find a man or two to sponsor through the Steps. If not (or even if so), you might want to find someone to take you through the Steps using the Catholic in Recovery Workbook. If you really want to take things to the next level, register for a 1-day or weekend retreat. We have several throughout the year next year which will soon be posted to our events page.

FYI, our current 2024 retreat schedule includes:
April 5-7: Malvern Retreat House; Elkton, MD **Women’s Retreat**
May 17-19: Our Lady of Peace Retreat House; Beaverton, OR
June 7-9: Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament; Hanceville, AL
August 23-25: St. Felix Catholic Center; Huntington, IN
September 27-29: Prince of Peace Abbey; Oceanside, CA
November 1-3: Subiaco Abbey; Subiaco, AR
TBD: Spiritual Life Center, Wichita, KS

There are a lot of good suggestions around what to look for in a sponsor in this thread. For additional support, you can download the CIR Sponsorship Guide for free on CIR+ in the Recovery Center (scroll down to the middle of the page): https://my.catholicinrecovery.com/dashboard/recovery-center/

I have heard of many people finding sponsors or temporary sponsors in the CIR community and I am grateful to see those connections being made and people posting here to ask for help.

Hey Leif – I want to address the elephant in the room and say thank you for making this post. I am really grateful to see some activity on the forum in the two months since you posted this, but you’re right – there is an opportunity for more (hopefully daily) activity that allows us to get into some rich discussions about addiction recovery and our faith. I don’t know of another place where these discussions are being had, so we’re going to work hard to ensure things stay active. Thanks to all those who come here to ask questions and share experience, strength, and hope.

I also recognize that there is some opportunity for us to make the user experience of the community forum a little better, so if anyone has feedback related to the layout or anything else, feel free to post them here. Let’s bring some life to this forum!

I’m glad you found our community, Mark! Have you had a chance to make it to a virtual meeting? I appreciate you introducing yourself here in the forum and expressing your desire to connect with fellows Catholics in recovery. You’re in the right place, my friend.

I love the way you put this, Kathy! I have heard of many ways of explaining what happens in the Ninth Step and process of making amends (reconciliation, restoration), and I believe restitution is just as applicable. This is like the blend of a verbal amends and a living amends. The first time I worked through the Steps, my sponsor made it very clear that I stole the peace of mind of those closest to me by my behavior and I needed to start acting with integrity if I wanted to earn back their (and, maybe more importantly, my own) trust. Praise God for the grace, mercy, and restitution we get to experience through the Twelve Steps!

Great question, Rose! We are in the process of getting facilitators to prepared to lead small workbook groups, although you may find that your question prompts an invitation from some who are currently in the process of forming a small group organically and would be delighted to have you join.

**Note to others: if you are planning to form a small workbook group and looking for participants, please respond to this thread.
