Daily Reflection
Thursday of the Third Week of Easter

Thursday of the Third Week of Easter

The first reading today is a powerful example of someone who knows that they can’t fully understand something without help. This is similar to our need for sponsorship in recovery groups. It is an unwritten rule in many 12-step recovery groups that a newcomer should work the steps with a sponsor. Just as the Ethiopian eunuch felt inadequate to interpret Scripture by himself and needed help to understand by being transformed through baptism, so too does the new person in 12-step recovery need help from a sponsor to understand and be transformed by the power of the Twelve Steps.

Once the person in recovery, led by his or her sponsor, experiences this amazing and awesome spiritual awakening, then they too cry out like the psalmist in today’s Responsorial Psalm:

“Bless our God, you peoples,
loudly sound his praise;
He has given life to our souls,
and has not let our feet slip.”

Today’s Gospel reading reminds us that Jesus is the ultimate and universal sponsor who helps us to understand God. It is through Jesus that we come to know God our Father in heaven. As grateful Catholics in recovery we get to experience, know, and commune with God in the most intimate way, beginning with the sacrament of baptism that makes it possible to receive Jesus in the Eucharist at every Mass.

Reflection Questions

  • What has your experience been like working with a sponsor in recovery? How can you relate to the Ethiopian eunuch who needed help to understand the spiritual life better?
  • How has integrating your recovery and Catholic faith with the Twelve Steps and the sacraments given you hope and helped you overcome your addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments?

Daily Mass Readings

First Reading: Acts 8:26-40
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 66:8-9, 16-17, 20
Gospel: John 6:44-51

Saint George, Martyr

Audio Reflection

(d.c.304) — George was a Greek Roman who may have been a soldier in the Roman army, possibly a member of the Praetorian Guard for Emperor Diocletian. He was sentenced to death for refusing to deny his Christian faith. The rest of his story, such as the dragon-slaying and extraordinary chivalry, appear to be medieval additions first appearing in the 11th century. George is venerated as one of the 14 Holy Helpers, a group of saints invoked with special confidence during the Black Plague and other times of adversity because of their proven intercessory assistance.

Recovery can feel like an epic journey of facing a powerful servant of darkness. No doubt, some deliverance from real demons can be part of this heroic quest. How do you equip yourself for spiritual battle in recovery?

“Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:19-20).
