What helps me to break a bad habit or cycle, is knowing that I have the opportunity to rewrite my story. I don’t have to keep doing the same old thing that is comfortable to me, yet doesn’t bring me serenity. For example, instead of reaching for a drink as a reward or an escape, I can go for a 10 minute walk in nature, I can get a pedicure, I can relax in a bath, I can read or I can pray. If I pause, pray and involve God in my decisions, I am better able to rewrite my story and make a choice that will bring me serenity. Where is the serenity in my next choice? In the past alcohol made all my decisions and today, with God I am able to make better decisions.

I just want to remind everyone “Don’t leave before the miracle”! It took me years to achieve long-term sobriety and it took me multiple attempts until the desire was removed. By the grace of God, today I am at peace and I have joy in my heart. God has infinite power and with God, I stay sober one day at a time!

This is very powerful and a great way to take action for Step 2. Looking back, I had to do a lot of work to get to a place where I believed wholeheartedly that God could restore me to sanity. This is a transformative spiritual tool and I will be sharing this with sponsees going forward.
