READ

“If you can’t find a sponsor after some time, then you’re probably not going to enough meetings and you’re probably not putting yourself out there enough because people are willing to sponsor others. We might also need to take a look at the way we are presenting ourselves. If you’re asking for a sponsor but expressing an attitude of “I know it all” then that person is going to be seen as challenging to work with and not many people are going to want to sponsor them. Just keep going to different meetings and keep trying.” - Scott W.

“I was always told when looking for a sponsor to look for someone who has what you want, meaning character attributes that I desire. I looked for someone who I would like to emulate and who had a sense of peace and joy about them—someone with grace and dignity. I looked for someone who was striving to be the best version of themselves with Christlike attributes.” - Jana I.

REFLECT

Reflect on the following questions. It’s recommended that you write these down in a journal. Feel free to share your responses below in the discussion board.

  • Am I consistently attending meetings and making my need for a sponsor known to others?
  • Are there attitudes such as pride, fear, entitlement, or self-protection that may be keeping me from connecting with others in recovery?
  • How can I continue trusting God and persevering even if finding a sponsor takes longer than I expected?
