Finding a Sponsor

This recovery journey details the critical importance and value of having a sponsor in recovery as well as offering practical advice for working with a sponsor to begin and maintain your recovery. We suggest building a recovery team, or your own “spiritual board of directors,” which should include your sponsor, friends in recovery, mentors, members of your home group, accountability partners, and perhaps a therapist, confessor, or spiritual director. All are valuable, although there is no substitute for having a sponsor. As countless individuals who have found freedom and healing from their addiction or unhealthy attachment can attest, working the Twelve Steps under the guidance of a committed sponsor—someone who can walk alongside you and share their experience, strength, and hope—is one of the greatest gifts 12-step recovery offers.
