READ
“My sponsor and I meet in person once a week at her house. We read, reflect, and pray. She usually gives me an action step based on the Twelve Steps or if there is something I am struggling with. She puts a lot of focus on taking action rather than just thinking. The next time we meet or talk, I’ll tell her if I have completed the action (i.e. journaled, made a phone call, prayed or meditated, reached out to someone who is struggling, etc). We also speak on the phone several times a week and we attend two meetings per week together.” - Kelli D.
“My sponsor and I would meet weekly and go through the Big Book, starting with the Preface and reading each chapter paragraph by paragraph. As we read, she suggested that I write about what the reading meant to me and then we would discuss it. We also attended one meeting a week together.” - Kathy B.
“At this point in my recovery (over two years), I check in with my sponsor weekly. Initially, we read together, did the Steps together, and prayed together. Now that I have finished the Steps, we continue to address any new resentments that come up and discuss current challenges. We continue to reflect on daily readings for inspiration and continued growth.” - Jana I.
“My sponsor and I worked on a book together called Pathway to Recovery as well as the Steps. I would read a chapter and make notes on it on my own and then we would talk about it. If a crisis happened, I would call her and we would talk about it and what I needed to do about it. She was an immense help to me, step by step.” - Diane S.
“It might be impossible for us to discern for ourselves when making amends to someone might injure ourselves and others. This is why this discernment is necessary to do under the guidance of a sponsor. We want to prepare for the amends process and not just go into it blind, and in my case I did some role playing and practice with my sponsor as preparation.” - Scott W.
REFLECT
Reflect on the following questions. It’s recommended that you write these down in a journal. Feel free to share your responses below in the discussion board.
- In what ways has sponsorship—or the support of others—already helped shape my recovery and spiritual growth?
- How might becoming available to help others in recovery deepen my own healing and relationship with God?
- What would it look like for me to embrace recovery not merely as sobriety, but as a lifelong way of living with humility, surrender, and service?
