“My first sponsor shared her experience, strength, and hope with me, telling me how she overcame many obstacles in sobriety by way of a belief in a Higher Power and continually working the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, and working with others. After a few years of sobriety, God brought me to a Catholic sponsor who shared her faith and love of God much differently from my first sponsor who was agnostic. She suggested I go spend time with Jesus in Eucharistic adoration, attend daily Mass, and go to confession monthly. My sobriety took off like a ski jump that year.” - Kathy B.

“We want to have a discerning eye and certainly be prayerful and ask God to inform us of our next move but we don’t want to think that we need to have the “perfect” sponsor. We can find a great sponsor in someone who is willing, available, and has been taken through the Steps with a sponsor themselves.” - Scott W.

REFLECT

Reflect on the following questions. It’s recommended that you write these down in a journal. Feel free to share your responses below in the discussion board.

  • How important is it for me to share my faith openly with a sponsor, and what role do I want faith to play in my recovery?
  • Am I remaining open to receiving help and wisdom from people whose backgrounds or beliefs may differ from my own?
  • What qualities matter most in a sponsor beyond shared religious identity?
