“A sponsor is someone you can tell the worst things in the world about yourself to and know they are not going to leave you. It is someone with whom you can confide.” - Diane S.
“My sponsor had to be a woman first and foremost because women in recovery tend to share many of the same past experiences, traumas, and wounds that led to our addiction in the first place. I once thought that I wanted a man as a sponsor. I realized very quickly that what I wanted was undue and unwarranted attention—not a good idea.” - Kathy B.
“There were a lot of moments during my early recovery where my desire to drink was at an eight or nine out of ten and my sponsor brought it down to a four or five. We definitely want several people who are available to us for a phone call when we’re feeling tempted in those early days but a sponsor is someone who is not only available for a call but also has an intimate look of our lives and understands our addiction and recovery from the inside.” - Scott W.
REFLECT
Reflect on the following questions. It’s recommended that you write these down in a journal. Feel free to share your responses below in the discussion board.
- Which qualities described in this module are most important to me in a sponsor, and why?
- Am I seeking a sponsor who can genuinely guide me in recovery, or am I unconsciously searching for a “perfect” sponsor as a way to delay asking for help?
- Who in my recovery community demonstrates the kind of sobriety, humility, peace, or integrity that I hope to grow toward in my own life?
