(1698-1764) Saint Giovanni was educated by Capuchins, Jesuits, and Dominicans, and eventually ordained as a priest in Rome. He helped begin a hospice for homeless women and was a catechist to the homeless, beggars, prostitutes, prisoners, the sick, farmers, herdsmen, and teamsters. He avoided hearing confessions because of his epilepsy, but when he finally took on that ministry, he was very sought out as a confessor. Saint Giovanni had a special devotion to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga.
Because of his own infirmities, Saint Giovanni feared to minister in a way that became central to his service to others. We have made mistakes, but through service, we overcome defects of character, and we help carry the message to those who might not otherwise encounter it. How are you being of service in your fellowship or your parish?
Saint Giovanni, you sought the intercession of your own favorite saint, and you served in humility despite having legitimate cause to avoid it. Pray for us, that we grow in humility and a spirit of service, and that we find inspiration in the saints as you did. Amen.
