(315-403) Saint Epiphanius is a Father of the Church and was known for his strong defense of Catholic doctrines. He had extensive learning, was fluent in five languages, and composed the Panarion, a compendium of eighty heresies and their refutations. Some of his writings are cited in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
The virtue of prudence involves seeing things as they really are. Growing in that virtue challenges us to utilize the spiritual principles of honesty and acceptance. There is no benefit to living in denial—that only prolongs our sickness. Saint Epiphanius challenged people to learn what is true, and then to live by it.
“Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that He will make all things right, if I surrender to His will” (Reinhold Niebuhr, Serenity Prayer).
