Saint Bernardine of Siena

(1380-1444) Saint Bernardine was a great Franciscan preacher, theological writer, and renowned peacemaker. Pope Pius II called him a second Paul. He was also known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. Bernardine popularized a version of the “IHS” symbol we see often in churches. This monogram is derived from the first three letters of the name of “Jesus” in Greek. He often preached against gambling and games of chance. “Bonfires of the vanities” (burning of objects associated with sins, like dice, cards, and other frivolities) were held at his sermon sites, making him a patron saint of gamblers.

Changing people, places, and things was a theme of Saint Bernardine’s preaching on sin, particularly addictive behaviors. Repentance involves a complete turning away from sin, a reorienting toward Christ. We replace dependence on things and activities to help us feel different with dependence on God, our Higher Power. We learn to call on the name of Jesus (Steps 1-3).

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner” (The Jesus Prayer).
