“Practicing Step Three is like the opening of a door which to all appearances is still closed and locked. All we need is a key, and the decision to swing the door open. There is only one key, and it is called willingness. Once unlocked by willingness, the door opens almost by itself, and looking through it, we shall see a pathway beside which is an inscription. It reads: This is the way to a faith that works.”—Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions
PRAY
Third Step Prayer from Alcoholics Anonymous
God, I offer myself to thee
to build with me and to do with me as thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do thy will.
Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness
to those I would help of thy Power, thy Love, and thy Way of life.
May I do thy will always!
Amen.
REFLECT
Take time to think about and write down responses to the following questions. Once you’ve done so, discuss your responses with your sponsor and/or small workbook group.
- What does it mean to turn your will and life over to the care of God?
- Reflect on and share a moment when the “key of willingness” opened a locked door for you.
- How do you understand the saying, “This is the way to a faith that works”?
- How do merciful actions toward others relieve you of bondage to self?
ACT
Complete the following before moving on to section 7:
