Section 2 – Baptism

The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments

Module 2 of 8

Section 2 - Baptism

PRAY

Lord,
Enable the Holy Spirit to open my heart and mind to receive today’s insights and encouragement so that I may find healing, freedom, and joy through the sacramental life of the Church and the 12-steps of recovery.
Amen.

REFLECT

Reflect on the following questions. It’s recommended that you write these down in a journal. You might also want to share them with your sponsor, your fellows in recovery, or others who share your faith.

“Incorporated into Christ by Baptism, the person baptized is configured to Christ. Baptism seals the Christian with the indelible spiritual mark (character) of his belonging to Christ. No sin can erase this mark, even if sin prevents Baptism from bearing the fruits of salvation.82 Given once for all, Baptism cannot be repeated” (The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1272).

  • In Baptism, we are immersed into the new life that God offers us. How have you experienced something similar as you’ve started your recovery? How so?
  • Have you accepted that your life has become unmanageable? If so, what did that moment (or moments) look like for you?
  • How do you lean on the faith of others in your parish and recovery groups? If you aren’t already, how might you do so today?

ACT

Reach out to someone in recovery or your faith community with whom you lean on when you're feeling weak in your recovery or faith journey. Even if you're not currently in need of support, reach out and ask if there is anything you can do for them.
