Day 59

The Pathway to Recovery

Module 59 of 70

Day 59

To finish today's module, find time to pray, read through the below reflections, complete the five daily habits, attend a recovery meeting, and share what's on your heart and mind on today's discussion board.

PRAY

Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change
the courage to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time,
accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.

Taking, as Jesus did,
this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it.

Trusting that You will make all things right,
if I surrender to Your will.

That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
and supremely happy with You forever
in the next. Amen.

Third Step Prayer

God, I offer myself to Thee – to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.
Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of Life.
May I do Thy will always!

Friday of the Sixth Week of Easter

Being in recovery from struggles with alcohol, I strongly gravitate toward Saint Paul and his conversion story. Although I wasn’t actively persecuting the Church, I know that some of my behaviors while using were not pleasing to God. Because of this, when I read today's first reading and see the Lord tell Saint Paul, “Do not be afraid,” I take it to heart (Acts 18:9). When I am tempted to become fearful or judgmental of others, I’m quick to remember my own sinfulness and God’s mercy in my life. I remember that we never know when “Sauls may be converted into Pauls.”

The Lord commands Saint Paul to keep proclaiming Him: “Go on speaking, and do not be silent, for I am with you” (Acts 18:9-10). I think this is a reminder to those of us who have received the gift of sobriety to “go on” and share the message of God’s infinite mercy with others. In a way similar to the woman from today’s Gospel reading, when we do this we “no longer [remember] the pain because of [our] joy” from now being in recovery. When we are open to sharing and living out the word of God, our crosses of addiction and unhealthy attachments ultimately lead us to be reborn in Christ.

Saint Isidore the Farmer

Audio Reflection

(c.1070-1130) — Saint Isidore was a pious Spanish farmer from Madrid, married to Blessed Maria de la Cabeza. Their only son died young and they devoted their lives to prayer, helping the poor, and doing good works. Many miracles are attributed to his intercession and his body remains incorrupt (i.e. has not decayed).

Saint Isidore was a hard worker and a very dedicated person of prayer. When people complained that he was spending too much time at the church instead of working on the farm, legend has it that angels were plowing his fields on his behalf. Which is more important? Consider the story of Mary, Martha, and Jesus. We can’t ignore or downplay the essential character of Step 11 and prayer in our recovery.

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her” (Luke 10:41-42).
