Section 6 – Surrender

The CIR Digital Workbook Companion

Module 6 of 20

Section 6 - Surrender

“Practicing Step Three is like the opening of a door which to all appearances is still closed and locked. All we need is a key, and the decision to swing the door open. There is only one key, and it is called willingness. Once unlocked by willingness, the door opens almost by itself, and looking through it, we shall see a pathway beside which is an inscription. It reads: This is the way to a faith that works.”—Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions

PRAY

Third Step Prayer from Alcoholics Anonymous

God, I offer myself to thee
to build with me and to do with me as thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do thy will.
Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness
to those I would help of thy Power, thy Love, and thy Way of life.
May I do thy will always!
Amen.

REFLECT

Take time to think about and write down responses to the following questions. Once you’ve done so, discuss your responses with your sponsor and/or small workbook group.

  • What does it mean to turn your will and life over to the care of God?
  • Reflect on and share a moment when the “key of willingness” opened a locked door for you.
  • How do you understand the saying, “This is the way to a faith that works”?
  • How do merciful actions toward others relieve you of bondage to self?

ACT

Complete the following before moving on to section 7:

  • Memorize the Third Step Prayer
  • Reverently recite the Third Step Prayer with your sponsor and/or small workbook group

wow interesting I was just on a group meeting for step 6 on willingness and now listening to the sister above on not wanting to be seen I have grown up with years in my life with low self esteem and even today while trying to have the identity God has sometimes put myself down, what i see here is that surrender and willingness is that God wants me to give myself to Him because He can do something good with it I think its that healing attitude of hope that helps I would like to do a full step inventory at some point and in many ways with my sponsor I have begun but yes I believe the willingness is the key for God to have all of me and with understanding the good and His love in me I can continue to face the darker spots of shame, fear and even unhealed resentments I have tried to surrender to the Lord
