(Luke 2:22-38) Today’s feast commemorates the Presentation of the Infant Jesus in the Temple and the purification of the Blessed Mother according to the Mosaic law, which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus. Jesus is consecrated to God, and two prophets, Simeon and Anna, appear, giving thanks to God and speaking about the destiny and significance of the Holy Infant. The feast is sometimes called Candlemas because of the blessing of candles in honor of Christ being a “light for revelation to the Gentiles” prophesied by Saint Simeon.
Mary and Joseph followed the Mosaic law closely and lived their faith boldly. Simeon and Anna were attentive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and patiently waited on the Lord. Spend some time meditating on the Fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary (The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple). What is God saying to you through this mystery?
“Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted, (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (Saint Simeon to the Blessed Mother, Luke 2:34-35).
