(480-543) Born to Italian nobility, Scholastica was the sister (later tradition says twin sister) of Saint Benedict of Nursia. Most information about these siblings comes from the Dialogues of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, written shortly after the lives of the saintly siblings. According to Book 2, Chapter 33 of the Dialogues, she was a nun while Benedict was a monk. They would visit each other once a year, and on the last occasion, Scholastica prayed for a storm to remain in her brother’s company through the night. Miraculously, a clear night instantly changed into a severe thunderstorm, making travel deadly and giving the two more time to talk about theology and praise God together. Benedict had a vision of her death three days later.
One can imagine the incredible conversation great saints have with one another when sharing about their favorite topic: God. Great conversation plays a central role in 12-step recovery, as we listen to others’ and share our own experience, strength, and hope. What have been some pivotal conversations in your recovery?
“I asked you and you would not listen; so I asked my God and he did listen” (Saint Scholastica).
