(d.c.415) Maruthas was a monk and bishop in the Kingdom of Persia, modern-day Syria. He was a friend of Saint John Chrysostom, attended the First Council of Constantinople, and presided over the Council of Seleucia. Maruthas built and restored churches, composed hymns, recovered relics, and recorded the “Acts” of several Persian martyrs. The city where he presided as bishop became known as Martyropolis because of the number of relics he brought there. Maruthas won the esteem of the king of Persia and negotiated peace with the Persians and the Roman Empire.
Saint Maruthas was deeply inspired by the martyrs. Do you find inspiration in the lives of others in recovery? Do you find inspiration for your recovery in the lives of the saints, and if so, which ones?
“What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?… No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us” (Romans 8:35, 37).
