Saint Magnus of Fussen

(d.c.666) Magnus, also known as Magnoald or Mang, was a Benedictine priest and spiritual student of Saint Columban and Saint Gall in what is now Switzerland. He evangelized in Bavaria, Germany, and founded a monastery in Fussen, Germany, now known as Saint Mang’s Abbey. Legends grew of his defeat of a dragon to gain the land for his monastery. In the New World, devotion to Saint Magnus was brought by German immigrants, and his intercession is credited for the end of the 1856-1857 Rocky Mountain locust plague in Minnesota.

Saint Magnus is not known for any writing or quotes, but a life lived well—a powerful and effective life of prayer. We recognize that we are powerless (Step 1), but how powerful do we allow God to be in our lives (Steps 2-3, 7, 11-12)? He can conquer all of our demons.

“Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back…The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it” (Revelation 12:7, 9).
