(1651-1719) Jean-Baptiste was born to wealthy nobility in Reims, France. He received an excellent education and began seminary studies, but he had to return home at 21 after his parents both died and he became head of the household. After caring for his six siblings until they reached adulthood, he returned to seminary, was ordained, and completed a doctorate in theology. Jean-Baptiste became the spiritual director to the Sisters of the Child Jesus, who ran schools for poor girls. He became dedicated to the education of the poor and founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He was the first to divide students into grades, started schools for teachers, and founded high schools and trade schools.
Jean-Baptiste would be a fitting patron saint for sponsors. Do you begin sessions with your sponsor or sponsees together in prayer?
“In all we undertake for God’s glory and the salvation of souls, we should begin by prayer to ask of God the light and grace necessary to secure success in this holy ministry. For we can achieve success only insofar as He helps us and as the Holy Spirit directs us” (Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle).
