(d.c.541) September 12, the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, is also the memorial of Saint Ailbe (sometimes translated as Saint Elvis), a disciple of Saint Patrick of Ireland. Whether or not Ailbe preached in Ireland before Patrick varies by source, but the most reliable sources agree that the two Saints worked together (Ailbe being the disciple and Patrick the master). Ailbe had the ability to inspire others to become not just Christians, but saints.
Saint Patrick and Saint Ailbe were missionary evangelists in an area where Christianity was unknown. How would they know without someone to tell them? The newcomer is “the most important person in the room” because “we can’t keep what we have without giving it away.” They help us remember our own “gift of desperation” but also give us the gift of an opportunity to share our experience, strength, and hope. What are you doing to welcome the newcomer and to spread the message?
“Against the torrent of the world, let him be watchful…against the brood of the world, let him be warlike” (The Monastic Rule of Saint Ailbe).
