(1571) Pope Saint Pius V was moved to institute the feast now known as Our Lady of the Rosary when, on October 7, 1571, the Christian naval forces, far outnumbered and outgunned, massively defeated the Turkish Ottoman navy just off the west coast of Greece in what is titled the Battle of Lepanto. That very day, before the battle, Rosary processions were made in Rome and throughout Europe, and the entire crew of some 200 ships prayed the Rosary going into battle. By all military accounts, the Ottoman fleet had a great advantage and should have won the battle. Saint Pius V and many others attributed the victory to the intercession of Our Lady.
Many saints, such as Padre Pio, Louis de Montfort, Bartolo Longo, and John Paul II, give witness to the incredible power of Mary’s intercession and the transforming contemplation available in the Rosary. Is praying the Rosary a part of your Step 11?
“The holy Rosary is a powerful weapon. Use it with confidence and you’ll be amazed at the results” (Saint Josemaria Escriva).
