Blessed Philip Rinaldi

(1856-1931) Philip met Saint John Bosco when he was five years old and became his disciple at 22. Inspired by his friend and mentor, he became a Salesian priest, novice master, provincial director, vicar general, and Rector Major (the third successor of John Bosco). Philip worked to increase Salesian vocations and brought the order into the 20th century.

Pope Saint John Paul II said of Philip Rinaldi at his beatification homily on April 29, 1990, “His vocation was born from an encounter with the apostle of youth, who personally initiated him onto the path of religious and priestly formation. He emulated his virtues and spiritual characteristics, so much so that he was called his ‘living image.’” Saints inspire saints. Recovering addicts inspire those struggling to leave active addiction. Who has been your inspiration for holiness and recovery?

“What must you do to have life? Before all else, the first thing you have to do is pray for courage every day to carry the cross the Lord has assigned you. Then let each of you do your own work really well, the work proper to your state, as God wants it, and according to your condition” (Blessed Philip Rinaldi).
