Blessed Anton Martin Slomsek

(1800-1862) Anton was born in modern Slovenia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The empire spoke German and was suppressing his native language while he was in seminary. As a priest, he taught Slovenian to seminarians, and as a bishop, he overhauled the local education system and opened publishing houses to print Catholic material and history in the language. The area retains a nearly 100% literacy rate to this day.

The way Blessed Anton revamped education in Slovenia takes discipline and patience. These are two spiritual principles we often need to develop in recovery. Where do we need more attention to these principles? How do we develop discipline in recovery?

Ad maiorem Dei gloriam animarumque salutem, “For the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls” (Episcopal Motto of Blessed Anton Martin Slomsek).
