Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel reading occur right after He has foretold the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem and warned of great persecution. Jesus tells His followers, “Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute” (Luke 21:14b-15). Again, we are reminded to trust in that same “Spirit of God” that was sent to Daniel and glorify Him with our lives in faith, something that King Belshazzar failed to do.
In our lives of striving to overcome our addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments, we know that life provides us with many challenges. The Big Book tells us that we “trudge the road of Happy Destiny” (Alcoholics Anonymous). Note the word trudge, not glide. Yet, we can stay faithful to the path of our recovery when we trust in God, persevere in working the Steps, and partake frequently in the sacraments. Let us recall today that God is a good and loving Father who will not ever forsake us no matter how great our struggles.
Reflection Questions
- When you find you must address others about a difficult issue, are you more apt to prepare evidentiary material like a debater or to pray to the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance? How can you incorporate more of the latter in your life?
- Why is it considered good parenting to sometimes allow a child to undergo difficulty instead of always “rescuing” them? How might this apply to your understanding of God as your loving father?
