Wednesday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, we read, “‘Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.’ Jesus replied, ‘Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us’” (Mark 9:38-40).

By trying to prevent those who didn’t accompany the disciples from casting out demons in Jesus’ name, John may have been blocking God’s will. Fortunately, the Messiah Himself intercedes, knowing that God can work through anyone. We too must be on guard and vigilant against falling into rigid thinking that prevents the activity of the Holy Spirit in our lives and the lives of those around us. We must remain open-hearted with respect to others’ recovery and relationship with God, which may look different from our own. Acknowledging that there are many roads to trudge toward “happy destiny,” let us strive to remain inclusive rather than exclusive. In this way, we can remain humble, enabling God, our sponsors and fellows, and the Twelve Steps to be our teachers, and that the mighty deeds that come to pass as a result give glory to God.

Reflection Questions

  • Are you confident in sharing your unique journey of recovery with others? In what ways have you done so?
  • What is your response to those with different ideas when it comes to recovery or a relationship with God? How can you look for ways that the Holy Spirit might still be working in their lives?
