Tuesday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

One of our recovery tools is to “‘stay in the herd’ by forming and maintaining a connection to a community in recovery” (CIR Workbook). Sheep are highly social and prefer to be in groups, finding safety and security in numbers. This instinct is so strong that isolating a sheep can cause stress and anxiety in the animal. Before finding my “herd,” I was similar to the little lost sheep detached from its herd and that had fallen down the cliff of addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments. Today’s parable reminds us that when we stray from the Lord and others, we become weak and will stumble. However, it is our very weakness, when acknowledged in humility, that also attracts the Lord’s divine mercy. Today’s parable is also a reminder to stay in the herd of our recovery and Church community.

The Responsorial Psalm reads, “The portion of the Lord is His people.” I understand this to mean that each of us is very special to God as His own possession and inheritance—each of us is unique and cherished. Saint John Chrysostom goes further by saying that “Jesus’ eye knows how to look beyond the veil of human passions and penetrate the inmost self of man, where man is most alone, poor and naked.” Jesus knows us intimately, and He calls us His friends. Let’s pray, “Dear Jesus, I know you love me with your divine love. Help me to love You more, and I will love You back by giving Your love to all I meet today.”
