Tuesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time

There are consequences for our actions, as we see in this reading. I have struggled with a similar character defect to that of Miriam and Aaron. I can sometimes be very critical of others, including the clergy. But this passage from Scripture is a reminder that such an attitude is dangerous to my recovery and spiritual health.

The good news is that God is merciful when we acknowledge our character defects and ask Him to remove them, trusting in His power to transform us. Today’s responsorial Psalm from David (who committed adultery and murder) gives us a beautiful and powerful prayer of contrition when we have sinned and are in need of that very transformation.

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me.” (Psalm 51:1)

Reflection Questions

  • Have you ever gossiped about an appointed minister of God (pope, cardinal, bishop, or priest)? How did you feel afterward?
  • Have you repented and asked God to forgive you? If not, how can you do so today?
