Thursday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

We are also reminded today that we are tested not only by worldly powers but powers much more diabolical and powerful: “For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens” (Ephesians 6:12).

We must not rely on our strength but, rather, on God’s unwavering mercy. We must rely on Him alone to help us make it through challenging times while remaining free of our addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments. The Lord is our only hope. Therefore, as Saint Paul reminds us, let us “put on the armor of God, that [we] may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold [our] ground” (Ephesians 6:13). May we do this by frequenting the sacraments, working on our recovery, keeping close to God in prayer, and trusting, always, in the will of the Father.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you approach your mission of recovery with the same steadfast commitment that Jesus did in His salvific mission? What practical steps keep you faithful to this mission?
  • What does putting on the “armor of God” look like for you?
