Thursday of the Third Week of Easter

Once the person in recovery, led by his or her sponsor, experiences this amazing and awesome spiritual awakening, then they too cry out like the psalmist in today’s Responsorial Psalm:

“Bless our God, you peoples,
loudly sound his praise;
He has given life to our souls,
and has not let our feet slip.”

Today’s Gospel reading reminds us that Jesus is the ultimate and universal sponsor who helps us to understand God. It is through Jesus that we come to know God our Father in heaven. As grateful Catholics in recovery we get to experience, know, and commune with God in the most intimate way, beginning with the sacrament of baptism that makes it possible to receive Jesus in the Eucharist at every Mass.

Reflection Questions

  • What has your experience been like working with a sponsor in recovery? How can you relate to the Ethiopian eunuch who needed help to understand the spiritual life better?
  • How has integrating your recovery and Catholic faith with the Twelve Steps and the sacraments given you hope and helped you overcome your addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments?

Daily Mass Readings

First Reading: Acts 8:26-40
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 66:8-9, 16-17, 20
