Thursday of the Third Week of Advent

Audio Reflection

At every stage of our lives, God has a plan and purpose. Every step we take in life is either moving toward or away from this plan. Addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments can temporarily soothe the pain of a life that has strayed from God’s intended path. We often make decisions based on what we see on the surface, frequently drawing flawed conclusions. Recovery begins the delicate surgery of healing, course correction, and restoration of our Imago Dei as beloved children. God places His messengers and supportive, Godly people in our lives to speak truth into the false stories we’ve been telling ourselves—stories that reinforce lies about who we truly are and question God’s promise that He makes all things new.

As Catholics in recovery, we have access to healing sacraments, sponsors who freely share what they have been given, and supportive communities that help us practice a new way to live in safety, knowing we are not alone on the journey. In the stillness of Advent, let us take sufficient time to receive God’s loving plan for us. His promises are true, and as we trust in His goodness, more of His blessings will be revealed.

Reflection Questions

  • Has there been a time in your recovery journey when something seemed certain, only for God to send a “messenger” who changed your initial understanding? If so, what did that look like? If not, are you allowing God to speak to you enough?
  • What has been conceived in your soul this Advent season that needs further clarity? How will you go about seeking God’s plan and purpose?
