I’ve experienced many hardships throughout my recovery over the years, and even some tragedies that were devastating—bringing me to my knees. Instead of giving in to my addictions, I trusted the men and women who loved me and encouraged me to trust God. I have experienced the love of God in so many ways during these difficult times in my life. God has put some amazing people in my life, especially when I was most vulnerable and felt like I couldn’t handle life anymore. I can truly sing with the psalmist today, “Remember the marvels the Lord has done!” (Psalm 105:5).
The key to lasting sobriety that produces peace, happiness, joy, and freedom is persistence in prayer, trust in God, and the Twelve Steps—even when we feel like we are being treated unjustly, like the poor widow in today’s Gospel reading. She didn’t give up. She had faith, persevered, and received justice. How much more will God help us in times of trials if we only persevere and have faith that He will take care of us and our every need? As Jesus reminds us today, “I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily (Luke 18:8).
