Saturday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

It is only by prayer, the key element of Step 11, that a detached attitude toward mammon and worldly things can be achieved. Food, clothing, and material goods begin to take on less importance in the presence of God. We begin to realize that those things don’t matter as much, and if we continue to make a conscious decision to spend time with God, the rest begins to take care of itself. The temptation for cheap substitutes and to engage in addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments fades. Therefore, let us set our sights on Christ alone, allowing Him to direct, guide, and supply us with all we need in this life and, most importantly, with all we need to enter eternal life.

Reflection Questions

  • Which temporal cares have subsided as a result of entering recovery? Which ones are still difficult for you to surrender to God?
  • What daily inventory practices have you found most effective in choosing God over mammon?
