We will never be truly free on the inside until we fully surrender ourselves to God and surrender the worries and anxieties that tempt us to seek instant gratification from our false gods, aka addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments. As we read today, we are called to trust that God will take care of all of our needs. “Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wildflowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them” (Matthew 6:28-29). In other words, when we turn to God in the midst of our anxieties and fears instead of our drug or unhealthy behavior of choice we find true comfort. And it is by doing this, by seeking first the Kingdom of God, that all “these things will be given [us] besides” (Matthew 6:33).
So, how do we concretely seek the kingdom of God as Catholics in recovery? We go to meetings, frequent the sacraments, serve others with love, and work (and rework) the Twelve Steps that invite us to totally surrender to God, one day at a time. We give ourselves over to the One who created us, the One who loves us, and the One who wants to dwell in us and through us to bring His heavenly kingdom to earth.
Reflection Questions
- How has trying to serve God and your addiction, compulsion, or unhealthy attachment worked out for you? What might you still be holding onto that keeps you from fully giving yourself to God to experience lasting freedom?
- What steps can you take today to surrender your false gods and allow the true God to reign completely in your heart?
