In today’s Gospel reading, we also see Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John immediately follow Jesus when called: “As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Then they left their nets and followed him” (Mark 1:16-18).
As we enter this scene with our hearts, minds, and imagination, we can visualize Jesus before us—calling us to come after Him to make us “fishers of men.” This is what we are also called to do in Catholic in Recovery communities: we follow Jesus and those who go before us to find healing, reconciliation, and purpose by spreading the good news of life, love, and salvation through Christ. By participating in the Twelve Steps of recovery and the sacraments of the Church, our hearts are filled with love and joy as we seek to share His saving Gospel with others.
Reflection Questions
- Meditate on today’s Gospel reading with your heart and mind, imagining that Jesus is calling you to follow Him. What is your response? As you visualize Christ’s love for you, what recovery principle or Step comes to mind?
- Consider a person in your CIR community who exemplifies discipleship. Might Jesus be calling you to reach out to this person today to learn from and/or be encouraged by him or her?
