Memorial of Saints Cyril, Monk, & Methodius, Bishop

Jesus “took [the deaf man] off by himself away from the crowd” to work with him one-on-one (Mark 7:33). This calls to mind sponsorship. Jesus works individually and intently with this man, similar to how Jesus works individually and intently with us through our sponsor. As I have worked with sponsors and sponsees in recovery, many of these sessions have entailed intense personal healing that has led to the “opening of ears” and the ability to speak more clearly, coherently, and truthfully about the realities of life and recovery.

Finally, after the healing Jesus orders the man and his friends not to tell anyone. Yet, the more they were told to be silent the more they proclaimed it. Similarly, once we are touched by the healing grace of God through recovery we want to broadcast it to all who will listen!

Reflection Questions

  • What was your primary addiction, compulsion, or unhealthy attachment that led you to recovery? What other defects or behaviors were later brought to light in need of healing throughout your recovery journey?
  • How have you taken advantage of the gift of sponsorship, whether having a sponsor yourself or sponsoring others?
