Jesus’ words in the Gospel today help to explain the way in which we are to evangelize [Faith] and carry the message [Recovery]. First, Jesus reminds us that until we have established the rudiments of our own faith practices (and our 12-step work), we have no business trying to lead others. It will not end well for either party. Secondly, Jesus touches on a crucial part of spreading our Catholic faith and leading others to recovery. We must remove the beam from our own eye before we notice the splinter in others’. Implied in this insight is a deep humility, self-awareness, and self-scrutiny that must occur so we can serve as an example to be followed. In our faith walk, this means being aware of our own sinfulness rather than focusing on others’ transgressions. In recovery, it means speaking about our experience, strength, and hope when we share at meetings and beyond, rather than telling others what we think they need to hear. As disciples of the Gospel and stewards of 12-step recovery, there is much work to be done within ourselves before we set out in search of souls in need of saving. We must pray for humility and wisdom to see our own shortcomings, character defects, and sins that prevent us from being a light to nonbelievers and active addicts alike.
