Memorial of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin

Those of us in recovery can relate to that one leper. One of the common bonds we have is gratitude. In Catholic in Recovery, we have the awareness that Jesus has touched us in a way that, like the leper, has allowed us to reintegrate back into our families and society. I have heard numerous stories in recovery rooms that involve gratitude. It’s by continually acknowledging what God has done for us in gratitude that we can maintain hope and trust in the Lord as we continue on our recovery journey. It’s by nurturing gratitude that we allow God to refresh our souls, just as we read in today’s Responsorial Psalm:

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; Beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul” (Psalm 23:1-3).

Therefore, let us foster gratitude like the leper in today’s Gospel reading to maintain freedom from addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments on the straight and narrow path of recovery.
