When we were in the thick of our addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments, we were anything but humble. Our selfish behavior kept us far from thinking of others and only of ourselves, pushing us from God and our neighbors. We made a mess of our lives, which we ultimately realized we could not fix by ourselves. Yet, we can take heart, for our first reading reveals to us a God who is able to bring the Israelites out of the mess they got themselves into. And if He can save the Israelites, He can certainly do the same for us as Scripture reminds us:
“Fear not, my children; call out to God! He who brought this upon you will remember you. As your hearts have been disposed to stray from God, turn now ten times the more to seek him; For he who has brought disaster upon you will, in saving you, bring you back enduring joy” (Baruch 4: 27-29).
Jesus is always there to bring us out of our troubles if we are willing to make amends, both with Him and others, and call on Him always for help.
