Our great saint today was both light and salt to the world. He gave his full “Amen” to God, and because of this Saint Anthony of Padua is known as a miracle worker. One of Saint Anthony’s great miracles was his famous sermon to the fish. When unbelievers scoffed at his fervent preaching, the saint turned to the fish off the seashore and as his words resounded over the waters “a vast number of fish swam over to be near him [and] held their heads high above the water. They looked attentively upon the face of the saint; and they saw his abiding peace, gentleness, and serenity.”
At one time, we were like the scoffers, turning away from the Holy Word and to our addiction, unhealthy attachment, or compulsion. But now we’ve joined the “school” of our fellow Catholic brothers and sisters as we lift our heads in praise of God and in hope of heaven.
Reflection Questions
- How was your addiction like a time of darkness for you? Despite moments of excitement, how did these short-lived experiences ultimately prove harmful or false?
- What is your experience like being in a group of believers in CIR who understand your struggles because they have had the same or worse struggles themselves?
