Friday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Maybe we are still at a point where we are unable to obtain long-lasting sobriety or are still struggling with some other attachment. If so, let us remember that we are called to perseverance and take comfort in Saint Paul’s own experience of having “a thorn in the flesh” to keep him “from being too elated” (2 Corinthians 12:7). Despite begging the Lord to remove it three times, God tells him that His “power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). It’s this thorn of addiction that also offers us an opportunity to be open and honest with God and our fellows with humility and in turn help others navigate their own paths of self-denial as they seek salvation through Jesus Christ.

Ultimately, we can powerfully help others in the midst of our weaknesses through the power of God. When we have the courage and willingness to carry our crosses with patience and humility, God leads our way over beautiful paths and to amazing opportunities for healing and freedom. Miracles happen—both in our lives and others’. As Saint Catherine of Siena said, “Be who you were created to be, and you will set the world on fire.”

  • How has the “thorn” of struggling with your addiction, compulsion, or unhealthy attachment produced fruit in your recovery? How have you seen it do so for others?
