Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

When it comes to recovery, it is true that we cannot recover without our Higher Power, and it is equally true that we cannot recover alone. Self-surrender to God and service to others go hand and hand in recovery, be that through coming to a meeting and being honest, open, and willing to share, leading a recovery group, becoming a sponsor, working the Twelve Steps and making amends, and so on.

As we continue on our recovery journey, especially when we encounter setbacks and difficult moments, let us consider these words from the alternate first reading for today from Romans: “Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer… Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:11-12, 15). And may we exclaim as Elizabeth did in today’s Gospel reading: “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled” (Luke 1:45).

Reflection Questions

  • Contained in the Gospel reading for today is one of the greatest prayers in all of Scripture, Mary’s Magnificat. Meditatively say this prayer out loud, slowly and thoughtfully. How does Mary’s prayer speak to your recovery journey?
  • Is there someone in your life whom you’re being called to serve out of love, similar to how Mary served Elizabeth during her season of need?
