Feast of Saint Mark, Evangelist

Does this not speak to our experience of being saved from the bondage of self as we work the steps, especially the first, second, and third steps? Let us turn again to the words of Saint Mark:

“These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them” (Mark 16:17-18).

Does this not speak to the exquisite paradox of our recovery, that when we embrace our utter powerlessness we gain actual and real power—His power—and thereby drive out our disordered way of living as we learn the language of recovery? Finally, let’s consider this:

“They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mark 16:18). Does this not speak beautifully to our experience of the healing fellowship we encounter with others in recovery and within the CIR community?!

Reflection Questions

  • St. Maria Faustina Kowlaska of the Divine Mercy recorded in her diary these words from our Lord: “Be not afraid of your Savior, O sinful soul. I make the first move to come to you, for I know that by yourself you are unable to lift yourself to Me . . . You give me pleasure if you hand over to me all your troubles and griefs (1485).” What do these words, in light of today’s readings, reveal to you about your recovery?
  • What is blocking your complete trust in God? What is preventing you from truly receiving His mercy?
