Saint George, Martyr

(d.c.304) George was a Greek Roman who may have been a soldier in the Roman army, possibly a member of the Praetorian Guard for Emperor Diocletian. He was sentenced to death for refusing to deny his Christian faith. The rest of his story, such as the dragon-slaying and extraordinary chivalry, appear to be medieval additions first appearing in the 11th century. George is venerated as one of the 14 Holy Helpers, a group of saints invoked with special confidence during the Black Plague and other times of adversity because of their proven intercessory assistance.

Recovery can feel like an epic journey of facing a powerful servant of darkness. No doubt, some deliverance from real demons can be part of this heroic quest. How do you equip yourself for spiritual battle in recovery?

“Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:19-20).
