Blessed Bernard the Penitent

(d.1182) After a misspent youth, Bernard was ordered to make a pilgrimage of atonement for having committed murder. He became a permanent pilgrim for several years, much like Saint Benedict Joseph Labre, living in poverty, wearing rough garments, traveling barefoot, fasting, and praying non-stop. He took on other severe penances as well and finally settled near the former town of Sithiu. He was known as a living saint during his life and multiple miracles were reported at his tomb after death.

Making amends is an essential component of our recovery (Steps 8, 9, and 10): admitting when we are wrong, seeking forgiveness, and trying to set right what we made a mess. What practices, similar to Bernard’s pilgrimages and penances, have you adopted to make atonement?

“Yet even now – oracle of the LORD – return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God, For he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting in punishment” (Joel 2:12-13).
