(d.125) Sixtus is believed to have been a Roman of Greek descent. He was the sixth pope after Peter, possibly taking his name from the Latin “sextus” for “sixth.” Older sources provide the spelling Xystus, derived from the Greek word for “polished” or “correct.” Not much is known of him other than that he instituted several liturgical traditions, including reciting the Sanctus, and that he was martyred during the persecutions of Emperor Hadrian.
The Sanctus is based on Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8, which both depict the angels and living creatures surrounding God’s throne and worshiping Him. When we pray this, we join in the never-ending heavenly liturgy. Are you intentional about praying with the full communion of saints (those living, those being purified, and those perfected in heaven) in your Step 11? Do you believe angelic presences can intercede and assist with your recovery?
“Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest” (Sanctus).
