Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Advent

Audio Reflection

As addicts, many of us were perhaps warned of our need for conversion and entrance into recovery by bosses, doctors, police officers, attorneys, family members, and friends. We were given a clarion call, a “voice crying out in the wilderness” for us to amend our ways and turn to God through recovery. Perhaps, like me, you may not have listened at first. But as the consequences of our behaviors became more painful—and more obvious—we began to accept the truth of our condition and start on the road to recovery.

The Responsorial Psalm refrain today (“Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand”) is yet another call for us to turn to Christ for healing and freedom. As we draw near to Christmas, let us reflect on the messengers God has brought into our lives who helped us find recovery, healing, and the grace of His forgiveness.

Reflection Questions

  • Reflect on the specific people who led you into recovery. Who were your Elijahs and John the Baptists who proclaimed your need for recovery and repentance? Have you expressed your gratitude to them?
  • How have you grown in your recovery? Are you prepared to carry the message of grace, forgiveness, and recovery to those still suffering?
