Friday of the Thirty-first Week in Ordinary Time

Audio Reflection

Jesus concludes the parable saying, “The children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the children of light” (Luke 16:8). When I was in the world, I hustled for success, approval, and control. But even after stepping into church ministry, I caught myself doing the same thing, just under a different mask. I was chasing religious status instead of money. I learned how to quote Scripture, but not how to live it. I preached faith while living in sin. I spoke about surrender while still holding onto my pride. In other words, I was shrewd in giving off the appearance of holiness as opposed to actually being holy. Looking back, I can see how much of that came from the religious mindset I had learned, the same Pharisaical spirit that still lives in much of the Church today. But God doesn’t bless appearances. He blesses humble surrender. The dishonest steward was commended not for his sinfulness, but for his wisdom—his ability to act prudently once he realized time was short. God is calling us also to be shrewd in the ways that matter to God, which means being humble, accepting His mercy, and seeking to do His will above all else.
