(1128-1180) Lorcán Ua Tuathail was the son of an Irish chief and was given as a hostage in exchange for his father to the over-king at age 10, where he was treated very poorly. After two years, Lorcan, Lawrence in English, was released to the bishop and abbot at Glendalough, where he became a monk and subsequently an abbot himself. Lawrence fostered spiritual renewal, became an Augustinian priest, and eventually served as the Archbishop of Dublin. He was known as a holy man and an effective peacemaker and negotiator.
In 12-Step recovery, we find an opportunity for peacemaking in being honest about our resentments at the start, as well as in Steps 8 and 9. In every case, peace begins with self-knowledge and checking our own hearts. The rule of love is our guide for God, neighbor, and self. When have you had to seek mercy over strict justice, either with yourself or with others? Are there times when the path to peace involves setting a boundary of justice instead, such as calling out bad behavior or providing “tough love”?
“He who loves peace will always love God” (Saint Lawrence O’Toole).
