(First century) Joseph gets mention in all four gospels: Matthew 27:57-60, Mark 15:42-46, Luke 23:50-53, and John 19:38-42. Joseph was a wealthy member of the Jewish ruling council in Jerusalem and a secret disciple of Jesus. He asked Pilate for the body of Jesus after the Crucifixion and, along with Nicodemus, prepared the body, wrapped it in linen, and placed it in Joseph’s own new tomb.
Action motivated by his active love of Christ (Step 3, 11), trust in God (Step 2), and acts of mercy (Step 12) are exemplified in the life of Saint Joseph of Arimathea. Do we have a devotion that moves us to service? How can we increase our love and devotion (Step 11)?
“Merciful God, whose servant Joseph of Arimathaea with reverence and godly fear, prepared the body of our Lord and Savior for burial, and laid it in his own tomb: Grant to us, your faithful people, grace and courage to love and serve Jesus with sincere devotion all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever” (Collect prayer for the memorial of Saint Joseph of Arimathea).
